I didn't even know it had begun, but evidently it was pretty serious. A police officer (who I assume is a soon-to-be-former police officer) holed himself up inside Earlwood police statation without hostages. He was then coaxed out by negotiators.
The police officers involved didn't say whether this guy was armed, but the artictle states that it is assumed he was and I think that's a pretty fair assumption. Armoured vans were brought in, many streets were blocked off and the station was surrounded with armoured police people. I don't think he was wielding a pool toy.
There haven't been many details released at this point, so motives are unknown. Depression is a pretty fair bet, looks like this poor guy really flew off the handle. I'll try and follow this one and update you all as things progress, but I'm already feeling pretty sorry for this guy.

Scientists apparently believe the answer to that question is "Mars, dude!". A space mission called Phoenix is set to check the polar ice caps of Mars for fossilised and current life. Leaving in August, the fancy science stuff should get to Mars in late 2008.
A meteorogical station is planned to be built on the surface of Mars, so meteorologists can predict the weather incorrectly not just on Earth. While that's happening those crazy French have a telescope up that will hopefully find more Earth like planets like the one I told you about before. In fact, forty are expected to be found in the next few years.
